One of our favorite dishes to serve is Nasi Goreng. Literally translated from Indonesian, Nasi Goreng means fried rice. Like many rice based cultures the Indonesian people began frying rice to preserve it for later consumption. Nasi Goreng was traditional made for breakfast the next day and still is by many Indonesian households. Because Indonesia was colony of the Netherlands much of the food culture was brought back to the Netherlands and adopted by the Dutch.
There are many ways to prepare Nasi Goreng and you can use just about anything in the recipe, it is a great way to use up leftovers like chicken, beef, shrimp and vegetables. The main ingredient is of course is day old rice. Rice cooked the day before and cooled is best as it holds up much better than fresh cooked rice which can be too soggy for frying.
We usually use a nice piece of pork meat if there isn’t any leftover meat to use. Cut the pork up in cubes and fry it in oil until done. Then we like to add green cabbage to our version of Nasi Goreng to help add some bulk to the dish. Chop up the cabbage and cook it down in a large pan with the pork and the cooking oil.
Once the pork and cabbage are cooked it is time to add the ingredient that really make the Nasi Goreng taste great. We use Conimex Nasi Goreng spice mix bag which you can purchase at our web store. Reconstitute the spices as instructed on the bag then add them to the pan with the pork and cabbage. Stir in the spices so that they are fully blended in.
Once the spices are mixed add the cold rice to the pan. You also may want to add a bit more oil to help fry the rice. This is also a good time to add Conimex Ketjap Manis sweet soy sauce to the dish. We usually use about a 1/4 cup but you can add more or less depending on your preferences. Once the rice is fried you can serve your Nasi Goreng. We like to top it with a fried egg but you can cook your eggs any way you want. Another great addition is a few Krupuk chips on the side to add some crunch.
