Black licorice laces with authentic flavor that many customers love. Multiple shoppers noted recent formula changes resulting in thicker, oilier laces with "sticky residue" and altered taste. While some enjoy the traditional licorice flavor reminiscent of European varieties, others preferred the original formulation and find the new version disappointing.

Agree with Licorice Lover, Gustaf's has changed. The laces are thicker and longer, that's fine. They are now very oily, which is very unpleasant. I'd rather have them stick together. I posted an earlier review, which does not appear to be here, that outlined the formula changes - I still had an old bag that I had just finished and compared the labels. I will not outline the changes here again, but the oiliness and different taste are extremely noticeable. Gustaf's was my go-to favorite licorice, but not sure if I will get it again. It is still a good licorice flavor, but I don't love it, especially the oily residue on my fingers.

I see someone else noticed the change in the licorice laces, and although I am not sure how recent this is, it is very disappointing. I buy in bulk to last me a few years because I prefer it a bit dried out, so this was a new batch for me. The laces are thicker and longer, which is fine. But they are very oily, which is really annoying. Unfortunately the taste is somewhat different, not as good as before in my opinion, but still good compared to other brands. I still had my bag from the old purchase that I had just finished, and in comparing the ingredients, they now list licorice extract instead of licorice root powder, glucose-fructose syrup instead of wheat syrup, canola oil coconut fat & coconut oil instead of palm oil, shellac instead of beeswax as the glazing agent, and a couple other different things. Just my personal preference Gustafs - change it back!! Not sure if I will be stocking up again when the current bags are gone.

Licorice lover

This seems to be a new version of the laces. They used to be thinner and I really enjoyed the flavor. They had a tendency to stick together, but that didn't bother me that much. This new variety has much thicker laces and they seem to be coated with something that prevents them from sticking together, but it also leaves a sticky residue on your hands. The flavor has also changed and I don't like it very much. I hope that Gustafs considers bringing back the old flavor.
